The Types of Anesthesia

During any kind of surgery, you will be given some type of anesthesia. These are medicines given for pain and sensation relief during surgery. Before surgery, you will have a meeting with the physician anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist. The anesthesiologist will do a review of your current medical condition and history and plan the appropriate anesthetic for your surgery accordingly.

There are different types of anesthesia. The type of anesthesia you get varies according to the type of surgery and your medical condition. Sedatives (that make you sleepy) and analgesics (for easing the pain) may also be used as part of the process of anesthesia. The different forms of anesthesia include the following:

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is an anesthetic agent that is administered to temporarily stop the sense of pain in a section of the body. You remain conscious after being given a local anesthetic.

Regional Anesthesia

Regional anesthesia is given to numb only that portion of the body that will undergo surgery. Usually, the anesthesiologist gives an injection of regional anesthetic in the nerves that provide feeling to that part of your body.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is an anesthetic that produces unconsciousness in the patient during surgery. The medicine can be either inhaled through a breathing tube or mask, or administered through an intravenous line. The medical professional inserts a breathing tube into the windpipe for maintaining proper breathing during surgery. Once the surgery is over, the anesthesiologist stops the anesthetic and you are taken to the recovery room for more monitoring.

Anesthesia helps in pain management in most surgeries and it would be very difficult to do any medical procedure without it.
